News: Major UK property owners save £16m through efficiency measures

The UK’s leading property owners have seen £16m in energy savings since 2011 as a result of making their buildings greener.
According to new figures from the Better Buildings Partnership (BBP), a collaboration of 28 property giants, they have also reduced energy usage by a total of 145GWh.

Some of the BBP members include Aviva Investors, Canary Wharf Group, Grosvenor, Hermes Investment management, The Crown Estate and Transport for London – with the 28 members’ total energy spend amounting to £120m.

Some of the energy-saving measures installed by the property giants include LED lighting, smart building control management as well as the use of renewable energy.

The results were calculated using annual energy usage data of 587 properties belonging to the members, which is used to create a Real Estate Environmental Benchmark (REEB).

The key highlights from the latest report include 25 per cent improvement in energy efficiency and 24 per cent reduction in energy usage.

Sarah Ratcliffe, BBP Programme Director believes that given the significant portfolio ‘churn’ many property owners experience each year, it can be challenging to achieve continuous improvements across whole portfolios.

“For those assets retained over longer periods, members have already captured the ‘low hanging fruit’ on poorly performing assets,” she said.

“This makes this progress all the more impressive and demonstrates real leadership and dedication.”
