Funding For
Homeowners
A variety of government schemes and grants are available to assist homeowners in making their properties more eco-friendly. We’ll guide you through the different funding opportunities you may qualify for.
There are multiple government schemes and grant options available to homeowners within the UK to help fund energy efficient properties. Each scheme and grant have criteria for eligibility, for more information see below.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS):
Who is Eligible:
- People in England and Wales
- If you own the property you’re applying for and you are replacing a fossil fuel heating systems - such as oil, gas, electric or LPG
- You’re still eligible if you’ve already had funding to make your property more energy efficient, for example by insulating it.
- Your installer must commission and install the heat pump within 120 days of applying for the grant or it will not be eligible.
What Properties are Eligible:
- Properties with a valid EPC
What Properties are NOT Eligible:
- Most new build properties
- Social housing
- A property that’s already been given government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler
What you can get:
- One grant per property
- £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
- £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump (including water source heat pumps and those on shared ground loops)
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler
Requirements:
- The system you install must meet certain standards, such as minimum efficiency levels (your installer can advise you on these).
- You cannot get a grant for a hybrid heat pump system.
- The maximum capacity is 45kWth for individual systems and 300kWth for shared ground loops.
Energy Company Obligation (ECO):
This scheme is running from 2022 to 31st March 2026
Who is Eligible:
You live in private housing and get one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Pension Guarantee Credit
- Pension Savings Credit
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Child Benefit
- Housing Benefit
If you own your house, it must have an energy efficiency rating of D, E, F or G to be eligible.
If you rent from a private landlord, the house must have an energy efficiency rating of E, F or G to be eligible. You must have the owner’s permission to do the work.
What you can get:
Help for energy-saving improvement:
- Insulation work, for example to your loft or cavity walls
- Replacing or repairing your boiler - or other upgrades to your heating
How to Apply:
- Contact your local council to find out if they’re taking part in the Energy Company Obligation scheme, or contact an energy supplier directly.
- You can find contact details of suppliers who are taking part in the scheme on the Ofgem website.
Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS):
This scheme offers the ability to get free or cheaper insulation to reduce your home’s energy bills.
Who is Eligible:
- Homes with an energy performance certificate (EPC) of D to G.
- Homes in Council Tax bands A-D in England or A-E in Scotland or Wales.
- You're a homeowner, landlord or tenant (either renting privately or from a housing association).
What you can get:
Support to install:
- cavity wall insulation
- loft insulation
How to Apply:
Enter your:
- Total household income
- The type of benefits anyone living in the property receives - you may be eligible for additional support
- Your email address or phone number so your energy supplier can contact you if you’re eligible
Warm Homes: Local Grant
The Warm Homes: Local Grant aims to provide energy efficiency improvements and low-carbon heating to eligible low-income households in England and is a replacement for the HUG scheme that is now closed.
Who is Eligible:
- Your home must be in England
- Your home must be privately owned (either by you or your landlord)
- Your home must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of D, E, F or G
- Your household income must usually be £36,000 a year or less
- Your home is in a certain postcode area
- A member of your household is getting certain benefits.
What you can get:
Suggested improvements to see how your home could be made more energy efficient like installing:
- Wall, loft and underfloor insulation
- Air source heat pumps
- Smart controls
- Solar panels
Home Energy Scotland:
Who is Eligible:
- Homeowners in Scotland
Who is NOT Eligible:
- Private landlord
- Business
- Property developer
What you can get:
Home owners could get up to £15,000 as a grant:
- Up to £7,500 for energy efficiency improvements
- Up to £7,500 for clean heating systems
If you live in a rural area, you can apply for extra grant funding:
- Up to £1,500 extra for energy efficiency improvements
- Up to £1,500 extra for energy efficiency improvements
Affordable Warmth Scheme (Northern Ireland):
This scheme helps those on lower incomes, and who are living in private accommodation, with the costs of energy efficiency measures.
Who is Eligible:
- Own your own home and occupy it as your sole or main residence, or rent from a Private Sector landlord.
- Have a total gross annual household income of less than £23,000.
What you can get:
A range of prioritised energy efficiency measures including:Â
- Loft and Cavity Wall insulation.
- Installation/upgrade of heating systems.
- Replacement of single glazed windows.
- Provision of Solid Wall insulation.
- Boiler replacement.
