Your Guide to Energy Assessment
Welcome to our FAQ section, where we address the most common queries about energy assessments and accreditation processes. Whether you’re new to energy assessment or an experienced professional, you’ll find clear answers to help guide you through various aspects of the industry.
An Energy Performance Certificate is a required assessment on every property that is sold or rented. It details the asset rating (i.e. the material efficiency) of a property based upon such attributes as building materials, insulation, heating system, glazing etc.
The EPC shows two things about the property:
The energy efficiency rating (based upon how much the home would cost to run; and
The environmental impact rating (based upon how much carbon dioxide is released into the environment because of the home)
The efficiency ratings are set on a scale of A-G. A = Best efficiency, G = Poor efficiency.
Please see additional information on EPCs and the EPC Register.
An EPC is valid for 10 years.
The EPC will include a Recommendation Report. The report includes cost-effective recommendations, divided up into low-cost improvements (up to £500) and high cost improvements (over (£500) to help you establish measures you could take to improve the energy efficiency of your home.

Only fully accredited Energy Assessors can produce EPCs.
An accredited Energy Assessor must be a member of an Accreditation Scheme such as Quidos.
All Schemes ensure that their members produce EPCs in accordance with the guidelines set by Government.
A Quidos Accredited Energy Assessor can be located from the national database of assessors (Landmark).
Please click here to be directed to the correct page.
Quidos ensures that all Energy Assessors are competent to carry out EPCs, by carrying our various checks upon their application to the scheme and throughout their membership with us. All Assessors’ qualifications will be verified, and all Domestic Energy Assessors must hold a valid Criminal Records Bureau (DBS) check.
The will also be audited regularly in line with the standards set out by the Government to ensure that the reports produced are correct and valid.
Failure to meet these requirements may result in the Assessor being suspended from the Scheme.

Complaints & Concerns
The rating of your property and its estimated energy use is calculated using a standard software methodology.
As such it cannot be conceived to be one hundred per cent accurate to each individual property, and it is based upon standard assumptions collected by your Energy Assessor.
Not only is the rating calculated on the energy efficiency of the property’s construction elements, but also the potential cost of the fuel used to heat and power it.
If you have any questions on the rating that has been given, please contact the Energy Assessor who produced your EPC for further clarification.
In the event that you are dissatisfied with the service you have a received from a Quidos accredited Energy Assessor, we advise that you contact the assessor in question, following their complaints process.
Should you not meet a resolution this way, you should contact Quidos to seek further advice.
If you have any further queries, please email complaints@quidos.co.uk
