What is a Non-Domestic EPC?
A non-domestic Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is a document that shows how energy efficient a commercial building is. The EPC rates a property on a scale of A-G and provides a set of recommendations that can be implemented to improve the energy efficiency of the building.
EPCs are a legal requirement and any non-domestic building which is sold/let must have an EPC in place before being brought to market. EPCs are valid for 10 years and can be reused as required within that 10-year period.
Who can undertake EPCs?
EPCs can only be undertaken by qualified and accredited Non-Domestic Energy Assessors. (NDEAs). In order to qualify as an assessor individuals must complete a training course that goes over all the knowledge and practical requirements for undertaking EPCs, and must then accredit with a government recognised Accreditation Body to register their assessments.

How is a Non-Domestic EPC Completed?
To complete an EPC a non-domestic energy assessor will visit site and collect information relating to the construction of the building as well as the services contained within. The assessor will take this information and enter it into government-approved software which will produce the EPC report for the building.
Which buildings need EPCs?
The vast majority of all commercial properties brought to market will require a commercial EPC. There are some exemptions for certain property types including religious and temporary use buildings. Full details of exempt buildings can be found here.
